Relive another famous Hundred Years’ War clash with a print of the Battle of Crecy in 1346! This print, painted in an early 15th century manuscript style, depicts English Longbow Archers combatting Genouese Crossbow men on the battlefield in Northern France. The battle was a decisive English victory: the French suffered heavy losses and the victory allowed the English to take the port of Calais, which became a valued English possession for the next two hundred years. Eventually, a wounded Philip accepted defeat and retreated. The ability to fire every five seconds gave them a huge advantage and as the French attacked again and again, English archers wreaked havoc amongst French soldiers. The French outnumbered the English, but fell foul of the English longbow. On hearing that King Phillip IV was raising an army to defeat him, he turned north and moved along the coast until he reached the small forest of Crecy. In 1346 Edward III invaded France through Normandy, taking the port of Caen and burning and pillaging a path of destruction through Northern France. Here are some of the key battles that shaped one of the longest and most drawn out wars in history. The Hundred Years’ War was the flash point as Edward III of England challenged his larger and more powerful neighbour to the South. I highly recommend and honour our historians dedicated work ethic.Throughout the Middle Ages England and France were locked in almost constant conflict: technically 116 years of conflict, five generations of kings fought for one of the most important thrones in Europe. Our historian's familiarity with the area and the large number of cemeteries played a key part in making this possible. Our historian located the two graves (in different cemeteries) and I left a commemorative cross at each one on behalf of our family.
I appreciated the research required for our historian to give me details about the circumstances of their Battalions and the type of conditions our forces endured on The Somme. Before leaving I had provided information about two members of my family who are buried in The Somme. Our historians experience is evident in the logical way they planned each day’s tours. The historian did their job extremely well and their knowledge of the WW1 campaigns and battles was extensive. The highlight of our time in France was your 3 day tour which was made incredibly special by our tour guide. We have just returned after 5 weeks in UK and France.
